===== Background =====
Whizz Dun was born twenty-three years ago in Brevoy, the bastard son of a woman belonging to one of the country's great noble families. His birth was never publicly acknowledged, and the circumstances surrounding it have remained a mystery to him for most of his life. The only clear memory he has of his mother comes from when he was very young. He remembers being held by her, remembers the fear in her expression, and remembers being given into the care of other people. He was too young to understand why she was sending him away, but he understood that she was doing it to protect him. Before she gave him away, she placed a small, broken piece of a necklace into his hand. It was the only thing she left with him, and although he was too young to understand its significance, he has always believed that she left it behind on purpose. He has kept that small piece of necklace ever since, carrying it with him as the one tangible connection he has to his mother. It was the last time he saw her. It was the last time he saw her.\\
\\
Whizz was raised in the poorer parts of northern Brevoy by a small group of people who lived outside the law. They were thieves and petty criminals, but they were not cruel people. They survived by stealing food, smuggling small goods, and taking whatever work they could find, and they took Whizz in because they had little else to offer him. His upbringing was far from comfortable, and there were long periods when food was scarce and shelter was uncertain. He learned from an early age that survival often depended on being clever rather than strong. His guardians taught him how to move quietly, open locks, conceal his intentions, and recognise when trouble was approaching. The skills eventually became second nature, although Whizz never adopted the same outlook as many of the criminals around him. Having grown up with very little, he understood why people sometimes broke the law simply to survive, and he developed a particular dislike for those who used wealth and influence to take advantage of people who had none.\\
\\
His childhood was a lonely one. Although the people who raised him cared for him in their own way, they could tell him little about where he came from. Whizz therefore began searching for the answers himself as soon as he was old enough to understand what he was missing. He collected old books and discarded documents, listened to stories from travelers and merchants, and became familiar with the names and histories of Brevoy's noble families. Over time, he managed to establish something he had always suspected: his mother had indeed belonged to one of the great families of Brevoy, and there were indications that her family had connections to the old House Rogarvia. What he could not find was the evidence necessary to establish his exact place within that family. His noble blood was real, but the circumstances of his birth had been carefully concealed.\\
\\
Whizz never felt ashamed of being a bastard. As far as he was concerned, there had been a reason for his mother to send him away, and until he discovered that reason he had no interest in judging her decision. What frustrated him was the attitude of the people who could potentially help him. Some nobles were willing to listen, but others dismissed him without making the slightest effort to investigate his claims. To Whizz, that was far worse than simple disbelief. He had little resentment toward nobility itself; he resented the people who allowed their position to make them indifferent to the truth. His growing hatred of injustice became one of the strongest principles in his life.\\
\\
His search eventually led him to a collection of old records containing several references to children born around the same time as he was. Most of the information had been lost or deliberately removed, but one detail caught his attention: two children had been born together and separated while they were very young. Further investigation connected the records to his own family and suggested that the other child had been sent south. Whizz came to believe that he had a twin sister.\\
\\
The discovery changed the purpose of his search. Until then, finding evidence of his noble heritage had been largely about understanding himself and discovering why his mother had given him away. Now there was someone else involved. If his sister had survived, she was the closest living connection he had to his past. She might know what happened to their mother, what happened to their father, and why the two of them had been separated. Finding her became as important to Whizz as proving his ancestry, because whatever answers existed about his family might have survived with her.\\
\\
His search eventually took him from the north into Rostland. The change in landscape was difficult, and the further south he traveled, the more time he spent away from the safety of settled communities. Roads gave way to rough trails, forests and swamps made travel difficult, and the threat of bandits and monsters was never far away. Whizz had already learned how to survive with little, but life in the wilderness forced him to develop those skills further. He became an accomplished scout, learning to read tracks, recognize dangerous terrain, find safe routes, and move through the wilderness without drawing attention to himself. The knives he had once carried simply because they were useful became weapons he could use with considerable skill.\\
\\
Eventually, Whizz found himself in a position where his search for his sister intersected with something much larger. An expedition was being organized into the Stolen Lands, offering the possibility of exploration, danger, and the chance to establish a new settlement in territory far removed from the established powers of Brevoy. To Whizz, it was an opportunity worth taking. The Stolen Lands offered new places to explore and new people to meet, but they also provided something he had rarely had in his life: the possibility of building something of his own.\\
\\
He joined the expedition with his usual mixture of caution and determination. His reasons were personal, but he understood that the journey could lead to much more than the answers he had been searching for. If his sister was somewhere in the south, the expedition might bring him closer to her. If the old records were correct, the wilderness and settlements of the Stolen Lands might contain clues that had been lost elsewhere. And if he succeeded in helping establish a new community, he could earn a reputation based on his own actions rather than on a family name that few people were willing to acknowledge.\\
\\
Whizz Dun has spent most of his life caught between two worlds. By birth, he belongs to the nobility of Brevoy; by upbringing, he is the son of people who lived by their wits and whatever opportunities the world left them. He carries both parts of his past with him. He knows how to move through a noble household without forgetting where he came from, and he can sit beside a campfire with thieves and outcasts without looking down on them. His experiences have made him independent, resourceful, and deeply suspicious of injustice, but they have also left him with a strong sense of loyalty toward the few people he considers family.\\
\\
Now, at twenty-three, Whizz has finally left the search for his past behind him long enough to pursue it somewhere new. The Stolen Lands may be dangerous, but danger is nothing unfamiliar to him. Somewhere beyond the forests and swamps may lie the sister he has never known, and with her perhaps the answers to the questions that have followed him since childhood. Whatever he discovers, Whizz intends to face it himself, just as he has done with everything else in his life. His name may have been hidden, his childhood may have been taken from him, and his family may have been scattered, but the life he builds from here onward will be his own.\\
